Director's View March 2017

Some more details about the programme for the international conference are soon to be uploaded to the website. Here’s a snippet to tempt you.

On Wednesday 21st June we’ll start and end on international highs. Blood Sugars is a three-year collaborative project between the University of the Witwatersrand and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Johannesburg. The Blood Sugars team has been working with people living with diabetes and the clinicians who care for them to develop a play devised from workshops in the hospital. They will perform for us and discuss their approach to research through drama. Find out more at the Facebook Page.

Our Big Debate that day will be on What does it all Mean? Current research and what should happen next. Break-out sessions include in-depth discussions at round tables on subjects as diverse as beyond participation, co-producing, co-creating in both research and practice; the relationship between mindfulness, creativity and engagement; artists’ training needs; business models for arts and health; and developing national and international networks.

The results of a popular vote for the best poster will be announced. The prize is inclusion in a special edition of Perspectives in Public Health

As a grand finale, the Australian artist, Vic McEwan, and Clive Parkinson will present the Harmonic Oscillator, an artist led international partnership between the UK and Australia that explores the negative effects of noise within the hospital environment. Vic McEwan is the Artistic Director of The Cad Factory in Australia. His practice involves working with sound, video, installation and performance, and with diverse partners to explore difficult themes within the lived experience of communities. Clive Parkinson is the Director of Arts for Health at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). He regularly blogs HERE.

Day tickets are now available - register via the CHW Website.

Alternative Visions picking up the pace

Our touring exhibition project in partnership with Outside In, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Borough of Poole Arts Service, The Wilson and Falmouth Art Gallery, 'Alternative Visions: Undiscovered Art in the South West' is progressing at an exciting speed, and we are about to frame the artworks ready for the opening exhibition at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery on 3rd June (preview 1st June).

Artists First, a group of 16 disabled visual artists with learning difficulties based in Bristol, are in the process of recording audio responses to the artworks, which you will be able to listen to when you visit the exhibition.

Watch this space for more news about the project!

Best wishes
