About the Conference

From 4th – 6th May 2018, Outside In is hosting the European Outsider Art Association (EOA) Conference at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester (UK). The conference is aimed at artists, curators and collectors as well as representatives from museums, galleries, collections, art projects and studio groups. This year’s conference focuses on ‘the Artist’s Voice,’ celebrating the work of excluded and non-traditional artists and sharing best practice in the field through a series of presentations, key note speeches, and workshops delivered by artists and practitioners.

The keynote speech to open the conference on the Friday evening will be given by multi-disciplinary artist Bobby Baker, who created the touring exhibition Diary Drawings: Mental Illness and Me 1997 – 2008, and was commissioned as part of the London 2012 Unlimited project for the Cultural Olympiad.

Presenters at the conference include:

  • the Living Museum (the Netherlands),
  • Out By Art (Sweden),
  • Venture Arts (UK),
  • Joy of Sound (UK)
  • Look Kloser (UK).

Panellists will include:

  • Garvald Artists (Scotland),
  • Headway East London (UK),
  • Arts Project Australia (Australia),
  • Blue Circus (Finland), Creahm/MadMusee (Belgium),
  • Creative Minds (UK).

In addition to all of this, there are dedicated slots for artist presentations that will be happening throughout the conference. (See more information about this below.)

There will also be an opportunity to find out more about the work of Outside In through presentations from director Marc Steene, and by taking part in creative workshops and tours led by Outside In artists. The conference will run alongside a new exhibition of work by renowned outsider artist Scottie Wilson at Pallant House Gallery, which in turn will be accompanied by a special commissioned work by an Outside In artist in response to Wilson’s practice.

In the run up to the conference (2nd-3rd May), you can join a VIP programme of activities that will include trips to Bethlem Museum of the Mind, ActionSpace, an opening of an Outside In exhibition at Long and Ryle Gallery, an outsider environment in Brighton, and a tour of a renowned collection of modern British and outsider art.

Opportunity for Outside In artists to present their work at the conference

As part of the conference, Outside In would like to give five Outside In artists the chance to present their work to the people attending the conference. Each slot will be fifteen minutes long, and artists will be able to use a slideshow presentation to show and talk about their work in that time.

We are looking for people who have good quality photographs of their work, and who would be comfortable standing in front of a large audience (around 70 people) to talk about their work.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please email three images of your work to kate.davey@outsidein.org.uk along with a paragraph (no more than 300 words) about your work and why you think it would be good to present at the conference.

If you do not have any high-quality images of your work or need some support to submit your work for this opportunity, please contact Hannah Whitlock, Outside In’s Artist Development Coordinator, by emailing hannah.whitlock@outsidein.org.uk or calling 01243 770845.

Artists will receive £50 for presenting their work, as well as help towards travel costs.

The deadline for submissions is 9am, Wednesday 28th February 2018.
