New Website Tells the Story of Healthcare in and around Salisbury

ArtCare are pleased to announce the launch of a new online digital archive which shares the historical collections held at Salisbury District Hospital. The website includes an interactive map, themed collections, highlight on key objects and downloadable resources for schools.

In December 2015, ArtCare, the charitable art service at Salisbury Hospital, were successful in a Heritage Lottery Fund bid for £40,000 towards sorting, recording and sharing the historical archives and collections. These range from the 1760s to present day and include the General Infirmary, Odstock Hospital and many other sites around Salisbury.

The items provide a fascinating insight into medicine, healthcare and social history of the city for the past 250 years. Lesley Meaker, project lead for ArtCare says:

‘Before the HLF project started in January 2016 our collections were inadequately stored in various locations, recorded in a way that didn’t allow easy searching and we knew that there was more material out there – yet to be found! We certainly had a huge job ahead of us and first off was to provide training for staff and volunteers on good archive practice. Using guidelines that follow museum standards on the best way to record, handle and catalogue items we had some painstaking and methodical work to be undertaken by the team. So far volunteers, who have directly worked with digitising the collection, have donated over 1000 hours of their time to the project. They have recorded more than 11,000 photographs, objects and papers. Highlights from this work have been added to the online website and this will continue to grow as the collection is documented.’

Themed collections so far include nursing, innovation, medicine from war, local memories and celebrations. The ArtCare team have already had much interest, including from abroad, from families looking to trace back relatives stationed here during World War 2 (when the current Salisbury District Hospital was a US army field hospital making preparations to receive casualties from D-Day landings).

So whether your interest is local history, family ancestry or curiosity about our medical collections, this online archive is a great starting point to explore more. As well as the website you can find permanent displays at Salisbury District Hospital main corridors and lifts.

Temporary exhibition panels are available for loan to local venues and ArtCare continue to work with schools and community groups to deliver talks and workshop activities.
