For Arts & Health South West: March 2018
AHSW

Director's View March 2018

I hope that you have all signed up to be members of the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance. London Arts in Health Forum will be sending out the monthly newsletter and the first one will be on the 9th April. The newsletter will keep you up to date with developments nationally and tell you about progress with the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance. We hope to appoint the Director in April and will be advertising for an events and administration post soon after.

Last week we held Arts & Health South West’s first Winter School, in Swanage. It was a fascinating experience for me personally and from the immediate feedback it seems it was a meaningful and productive time for everyone who was involved. We were a group of artists, health professionals, researchers and service users. Most people had more than one of those hats and the distinctions were not clearly defined, nor did they need to be. We gathered together for our first meal on the Wednesday evening and shared our hopes and ideas about the two day retreat. The following day we walked to Durlston Country Park along the coast path and collected objects from the environment to draw and to draw with. Lead artist, Sarah Desmarais, took us through an exploration of creative approaches, mark making and responding, and then we tried our hand at printmaking, using her miniature, portable etching press. The following day research lead, Paul Dieppe, guided our thinking about what was actually happening and why it might be related to feelings of wellbeing. We all had plenty to contribute! Various developments are being planned and we will have more to tell you soon.

As part of our regional development work we are planning two Action Learning Sets, led by our Chair of Trustees, Sue Isherwood. These will be delivered in collaboration with the sub-regional leads. We are also planning an awayday in June with the sub-regional leads to consider opportunities for more collaborative working across the region. We are in the process of updating the webpage about the sub-regional networks and will have more information on this soon.

Have a wonderful Easter break!

Alex
